This wedding is the joining of two families through the love and commitment
of two individuals. We hope that the coming together of our two wonderful
families, from different cultures, traditions, and edges of the continent,
will give you cause to celebrate the spirit of love, unity and creativity,
however it may touch your lives. July fifteenth is the day we have set aside to celebrate both the families we were born into and the families we have chosen: this wonderful community of friends and relatives that has provided us with love and inspiration throughout our lives. The values of peace and progress, learning to hear one’s inner voice clearly and rebel against institutions that seek to oppress it, these are some of the many invaluable gifts our families (both of blood and of spirit) have bestowed upon us, and this celebration, we hope, will serve as a small token of our gratitude. War is being waged on so many fronts; between nations, against the environment, on the impoverished and disenfranchised, on the sick, and on the unknown. Acts of violence are committed out of hate or ignorance, out of arrogance and out of fear, out of loyalty to ideals or out of greed; but all of these acts of violence are perpetrated under the single delusion of separation. When we are separate from the environment, we can convince ourselves we do not have to respect its laws, when we are separate from the poor, we allow ourselves to profit from the enslavement of our brothers and sisters. Our national borders lull us into the illusion that we do not need to learn to live with those different from us, our personal borders do the same. Only when we decide someone is separate from us can we make the decision to hurt him, to steal from him, to deceive or cheat or humiliate him. We hope as our families join together in an act of complete love, trust, and respect, that we might all take a moment to remember a single truth: though we may be separated by distance or time, by language or sex, by color or ideals, we are all members of a single global community, and the survival life as we know it depends on all people coming together, in spirit and in deed. May this and every act of love and compassion bring closer the inevitable unity of spirit of all living things. In honor of these ideals, we have solicited artwork from local artists along the following themes: We were delighted to receive a diverse array of submissions, and plan to show a sampling during the wedding. We hope you enjoy them. Environment / Zero Carbon Event Rahul and Sarah’s wedding is a zero-carbon event. The CO2 emissions resulting from air and ground travel of our guests are being offset by the purchase of supply-side green tags certified by Climate Neutral Network. Emissions trading (specifically carbon trading) is an important mechanism by which we can address climate change, catalyzing the markets for uptake of fundamentally lower carbon technologies for transportation and electricity generation. Carbon trading is a very complex subject, with plenty of room for debate and disagreement, as well as progress and innovation. For more information on this subject, visit the following links:
